Question: Any of the tech whizzes out there know anything about this? I'd love to
have several of these on my place down in AZ among other uses, but I've
never investigated webscams for that use before because I wouldn't leave
my computer on for months when no one's there. How is wireless internet
security camera?
Answer:I'd heard of cameras which have their own 'operating system' but this is
the first I've read about any. You would still need to plug in an
always-on internet connection to them somehow and provide the camera
setup with a 'static' IP address in order to view their output.
The service mentioned from Linksys which costs $20 per year - that's not
a bad price. $20 a month would be too much, but per year, that's
reasonable (I could probably setup such a thing myself, but not for
$20/year). That would still require a broadband connection, I'd think,
but may not require a static IP (one that never changes).
Hard to talk about their viability or ease of use without ever seeing
one in action. I think a neighbor does home security systems, maybe I'll
try to engage him on the topic next I see him in his yard (his has grass
and weeds too).
I setup a webcam over our broadband connection at home a few years ago
with products from X10 (despite their popups, they have cool stuff).
Could go to a page on my website and see a still image that updated
every couple seconds. Worked alright but lost its novelty after a bit.
Now the camera sits unused. The send and receive wireless units are
hooked up to my computer so we can watch movies from MovieLink on our TV
set...
