Question: Does anyone use camera security on their homes ? The type that uses
jpeg capture on their pc. I'm looking at setting up an external camera
and wondered if anyone has experience in this field.
Answer:We are not using it specifically for a security application but we
have recently been playing with some 2100 cameras from the
Scandinavian firm Axis
(http://www.axis.com/products/cam_2100/) .
These have a complete Linux Web server built into a camera (640 x 480
- C mount lens) and really are quite neat. FTP continuously or
e-mail on alarm (built in alarm contacts) and no computer needed -
just plug into your network.
Pictures viewed using a normal web browser with Active X or Java
(slower) plug in. If you have a public IP address for the camera you
can log into them from anywhere in the world. For about GBP300 ex
VAT a go these are quite impressive (If anyone wants to look at the
picture from one of ours get in touch - I don't want to post the IP
address too publicly, the server it is on is busy enough as it is).
