Question:
Any safe buying tips anybody? I Went shopping today and am seriously
considering a heritage 44 gun model. Do you need a safe home security
system ?
Answer:The implication of having an alarm system is that the
signaling will bring a response, rather than simply
allowing crooks to work on your safe at their leisure.
How long do you think it took for those crooks to yank out
that safe embedded in concrete? No doubt, a long time.
There is something wrong with a security system that
allows crooks that much time to work on a safe.
If you think that the implication is that the alarm would
have prevented the theft, then you are sadly mistaken.
The point is that given TIME, any system can be
defeated. The reason for the alarm system (and any
other extra layer of security) is to hopefully DENY
the amount of time needed.
I would wager that few home safes will be anchored
in concrete. All the more reason for OPSEC and an
alarm system to deny time and knowledge of your
security measures and possession of valuables.
There is a difference between visitors engaging in
typical activities vs. someone scoping out your
security measures. It is also not my fault if you
have blabbermouth buddies. OPSEC my friend.
My takeaway is that this utility depended on a
single point of failure and that's what they got.
The relevance to the home owner with a home
safe is the same -- don't depend on a single
point of failure system and don't assume that
the safe automatically means that your guns
are secure. Implement security in layers, maintain
a low profile, and stay in Yellow.
