Question:After a serious act of vandalism to my home, I have decided to setup a
fairly elaborate home security and video surveillance system. One problem
with video recorders is that if someone breaks in, they steal the tape or
the entire recorder, and you have nothing.
What I would like to do is have a web cam, or some kind of digital video
camera that is activated by a motion sensor, or possibly a series of motion
sensors and a script in HomeSeer. What will then happen is that the camera
will turn on, and automatically upload streaming video to an ftp site, or
maybe email it somewhere. This way, once someone is on camera inside the
home, there is no way they can get to the stored images. Has anyone ever
done this before, or know how to do it? I guess another possibility would be
to save the same video to several computers on the network at home. At least
then the thief would have to walk off with a lot of equipment.
How does a home security system component work?
Answer:Even with underground utilities, there still might be points of attack. Do
the utilities come up out of the ground before entering the house? Without
some hardending, they could easily be snipped there. In some locations, the
underground portion ends at the street, and it all the stuff goes up a pole
anyways. That is the most likely place a pro would attack the wires. I
believe you can pay the telephone company to place a casing over these wires
and provide some better protection.
It sounds like your taking this project very seriously. I wouldn't trust
any X-10 component to be part of a serious security setup. You might
consider using hardwired exterior rated PIRs (e.g. Optex).
