Question:
I just bought a condo. Wondering if I should get a home security monitor
system. Henderson is the one offering the package to smart wire and supply
the service. It's a low rise. Three story building with 12 units per building.
I'm on the upper floor. I figure a thief would tend to hit the lower
floors. Any thoughts? Anyone know about home security monitor system?
Answer:Don't bother with a security system. They don't do diddly squat.
Thieves don't care if they go off because nobody pays attention
anyway (pop quiz: if a car alarm went off outdoors right now, would
you run and look? Of course not), and if the monitoring station
ever actually calls the cops, the police handle it as a P3 (low-
priority) call, meaning they'll go take a look if they've got
nothing else to do, but there won't be any squealing tires or
flashing lights. The thieves will be long gone.
Save your money and get house insurance instead. Home security
systems are little more than a scam. They set up a system to phone
them if it ever goes off. There's nothing for them to "monitor."
They simply wait for their automated systems to call them. Hardly
worth $30/month. Not to mention that 99% of all alarms are false
alarms anyway, so not only do you get to pay $30/month for a
do-nothing monitoring system, but once or twice a year, you get
to pay a nice little $65 bill from the city for sending the cops
to a false alarm.
The security system companies just sit there and count their
money while they wait for their phone to ring. Don't buy into
the culture of fear and propaganda.
