Question: I would like to get some feedback on surveillance equipment that would be used
in a covert manner ie. nannycams etc. If any fellow P.I's have some
preferences as to reputable companies and equipment ,your input would be most
appreciated.
Answer:Try to buy directly from the manufacturer where possible. You will get
the best price and almost always better service.
For items like garden variety CCTV cameras, you may need to buy from
distributors because manufacturers have an enormous minimum order. Buy
from a CCTV specialty house.
In general, avoid *all* spy shops, and all Sears-Roebuck type mail
order and retail security equipment places that have a wild range of
products. Surveillance equipment is a highly specialized area, and it
is extremely unlikely an outfit can be truly competent in some many
diverse areas. Spy shops tend not to be genuinely competent places of
integrity or with fair prices. They do charge a healthy markup for
knowing where to buy something you don't. Now is the time to play
investigator. Most spy shops literally never have seen most of the
products they claim to sell. Some of these products do not exist.
For specific products, ask here and someone will refer you to the
manufacturer or high level distributor
