Question: I am playing "catch-up" -- building a new home (I am my own general
contractor so I can control the time at which the walls get closed in.)
I would like to add a basic structured wiring system - nothing too complex.
I think I understand the basics, but I have a question regarding the
appropriate wiring so that I will be able to add in a few TV cameras for
general home security. I'd like to mount 3 or 4 cameras under the eaves of
my home so that I can observe the exterior. My question is:
What type of wiring should I install now so that I will be prepared to
install a CCTV camera later on (I'd like to put off selecting the specific
camera until after I get moved in to the house and can take more time
investigating CCTV.)
Should I run Cat 5e cable to each camera location? Or RG-6 coax? Do I
need to provide some separate wiring to provide power to the camera?
In short, is there a standard wiring hookup for TV cameras that might be
used under the eaves of the house for exterior surveillance?
Answer:Depends on if you want to run cat5 or coax cameras.
I would run coax, as it holds up to the weather better. You would
want to get siamese cable. It has the power wires attached to it, and
It's flexible/convenient.
All you will have to do is attach a 2.5 female end for power (similar
to what you see on the end of a power supply for devices) and either a
BNC or RCS end for the camera.
If you are going to record to a computer, I would recommend a
Geovision DVR card, it can do 4 or more cameras.
