Question:OK just as follow up on my backup camera not working, I checked those
items I could that were suggested. I unplugged, and plugged it in again
at both ends, looked for fuses and those I did find were OK. My back up
system is the INTEC Car Vision Systems a CVC 111 (camera) and monitor
CVM550 and I also went to the INTEC site where replacement costs appear
to be approximately $405 per item. Now is this system worth say
replacing the camera or if I should buy something else as someone said
for that price you could buy a whole system. Any suggestions, I am
taking it to the shop where they will try to check the camera again.(no
charge if they have something they can hook to the fitting) Any
response would be appreciated.
I am not sure which to do because the cable is specific I assume for the
INTEC system as the shop foreman said different systems have different
connectors. The INTEC system had a square plastic coupling other than
that I assume they would have to run a new cable to put in a new system,
am I correct in this assumption?
Answer:Well if you want something on the cheap, here is what I did.
I bought a Saturn for a Toad and after hooking up a taking the rig for a
test drive, I was unhappy not being able to see the Saturn, while driving
the MH. I was concerned that if the Saturn had a flat, I would not know it.
Since I already had a 5" B&W ac/dc TV, I bought a $29 weatherproof security
camera kit from Harbor Freight. Since it came with 80ft. of cable, I used
tie wraps to attach it to the chassis, under the MH, snaked it into the
doghouse, where I keep it coiled up under it's cover. The other end comes
out and is kept under the spare tire in the back. I mounted the camera on
wood, that I keyed to fit over the back ladder steps, with bungi cords. So
when I tow, I just mount the camera on the steps, plug in the cable, and
hook it up to the tv, which I mount in a cardboard box stand. I did have to
buy a 2-Outlet 12VDC Car Power Adapter and a Universal Vehicle DC-to-DC
Adapter as the TV needed 12v dc and the camera needed 7.5v dc. Total cost
was $58. It works, I see the Saturn at all times and have peace of mind
knowing that everything is regular back there. It even comes with a mic. Now
as far as a backup camera, it might not be ideal, as it is not a wide angle
camera.
