Question:
I'm interested in setting up several cameras on the outside of my
house to monitor doorway, driveway, patio, etc. I already have the
video distribution thing figured out. However, I'm stuck on choosing
cameras. I have already experimented with the X10 route and... Well,
let's just say that I'm glad I was able to get a few bucks for that
pretty-worthless wireless color camera.
After spending the last few days doing intensive searching, I see that
there are MANY color-by-day and bw/infrared-by-night cameras
available. This seems to be exactly what I want. However, prices seem
to fall into three ranges: ~$59 on eBay, ~$150 and ~$250. The problem
is that I can't seem to figure out what the major differences are.
What are the important specs to look out for? Can you give me
advice on Infrared Surveillance Camera for my house? Please help.
I really want to buy something ASAP
Answer:There is some information on IR illuminators at http://www.extremecctv.com.
The more money you drop for the camera the better the low light performance and
the sharper the image (usually). For low light work, you want a camera with a higher resolution as well
as a "low-lux" rating. Be careful of the latter though because not all
manufacturers measure the camera's low light performance the same way.
This is probably the most confusing aspect of the whole experience
